Attorney for Neshoba clerks says his clients are innocent

The state of Mississippi has accused three Neshoba County administrative clerks of embezzling more than $1.3 million. However, a Meridian attorney representing the three clerks says his clients are innocent.

Meridian attorney BIll Ready Jr. is representing former Neshoba County payroll clerk Tammy Gomillion, purchasing clerk Julie Faye Russell and comptroller Jill Watkins. All three were indicted on seven counts of embezzlement each earlier this month by a Neshoba County Circuit Court’s grand jury. Eighth Judicial District Attorney Mark Duncan from Neshoba County is prosecuting the case for the state.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering said the clerks submitted more than $30,000 in fraudulent overtime hours over the past six years. The three salaried employees did not actually work the overtime hours submitted for payment, nor did they receive approval to work overtime as stated in the county personnel handbook, Pickering’s office said.
