There are many benefits to having an open week this late in the season beyond the much-needed rest. The coaches don’t get a chance to do something so onerous as to get themselves fired.
On Saturday, Les Miles at LSU not only let 17 precious seconds tick off the clock before calling his final timeout, but then he had his quarterback spike the ball with one second left instead of sprinting his field-goal team out to attempt what would have been a game-winning field goal in a 25-23 loss to Ole Miss.
