OXFORD — Today’s 6 p.m. scrimmage at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium should have more of a game-day feel for both the players and the coaches.
Coach Houston Nutt said that he would send some of his assistants to the press box booth for the first time. Offensive coordinator Kent Austin and graduate assistant Alan Hensell will handle the offense, while secondary coach Kim Dameron and graduate assistant Brad Villavaso will take the defense.
Nutt said he may send one other coach to the booth, as well, but hasn’t decided on who that would be.
“We’ll send them up for at least a little while (today),” Nutt said.
Nutt said that rain wouldn’t stop today’s scrimmage, which is open to the public. The only way it will move indoors is if there’s lightning in the area.
“We need a rain day anyway,” Nutt said.
Youth movement on D-line
Freshman Gerald Rivers, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound defensive end, has seen some repetitions with the first team during practice.
Even though he’s undersized, Nutt said he’s been impressed with Rivers’ athleticism.
“He just needs a year (in the weight room),” Nutt said. “You’d like to redshirt him, but you just don’t know.”
