Enthusiasm for President-elect Barack Obama’s swearing-in Jan. 20 has generated fierce competition for tickets to the event and is expected to draw 1 million people to Washington.

According to Carole Florman, spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, each House member will receive about 200 tickets and each senator will get between 300 and 400 tickets.

Alexander Guffin, press secretary for Rep. Chip Pickering, R-3rd District, said the lawmaker’s office has been flooded with requests.

“Our phone has been off the hook,” she said.
