Lost amidst the angst of the city’s consideration of privatizing the Public Works department Tuesday night was something of a surprise announcement by alderman Greg Denyer.
Late during the board of aldermen meeting, Denyer asked Mayor Connie Moran to raise her left hand, which is now sporting an engagement ring, and congratulated her on her upcoming nuptials.
Moran is engaged to Mobile native Jack Rosen. The two have been dating since meeting New Year’s Eve 2012 at a party Moran was attending with friends in Mobile.
Rosen, 53, is an Automation Control Expert with the AM/NS Calvert steel processing plant.
“I’m very excited and very nervous,” Moran told The Mississippi Press Wednesday, “and giddy as a 20-year-old. Marriage is a lot of work. You realize that as you get older, but I’m ready.”
Moran, an Ocean Springs native in her third term as mayor, said Rosen popped the question in the courtyard of The Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans on March 8. She said yes immediately.
“We had been talking about it since August,” she said, “so I can’t say it was a total surprise.”
The couple kept the engagement somewhat under wraps until they could hold a “get-together” with their respective families to make the announcement.
She said Denyer’s comment during the meeting caught her by surprise.
