State Auditor Stacey Pickering’s office recovered more than $1 million in misspent or embezzled funds in fiscal 2012, according to his annual report to the governor’s office and Legislature.
The auditor’s office recovered $1.1 million total, about $75,000 of which came from the repayment of disallowed expenses by county officials. The Property Audit Division recovered another $18,000 from officials who were ordered to repay the state for missing equipment.
The bulk of the money recovered — $1,037,000 — came from officials who had embezzled or misspent funds, Pickering’s report said. His office also issued eight new demands totalling $824,000.
