Within a couple of weeks, House Speaker Philip Gunn and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves are expected to announce committees to undertake a “comprehensive” review of Mississippi’s tax structure and budget and suggest changes.
This is one of the best ideas to come out of the High Street Puzzle Factory in a long while. It’s long overdue, and from what I’ve heard the scope of the work will be, unprecedented in recent times.
Over many years a majority Democratic state Legislature mostly created and raised taxes. In more recent years, a Republican majority Legislature has cut them. Often neither was done with much study or foresight, and the piecemeal work has left an inheritance of problems.
