Sparks erupted in an exchange between Hood and Hopkins when Hopkins charged that Hood had benefited indirectly from the $100 million MCI-World Com settlement.
One of Hood’s major campaign supporters is Joey Langston, the principle of the Langston Law Firm in Boonevillae, that successfully negotiated the $100 million settlement with MCI-World Com for defrauding the state.
The Langston Law Firm, the first to file against World-Com, received approximately 14 percent of the $100 million settlement. It should be pointed out the attorney fees in the case were negotiated separately and were not a part of the landmark settlement.
MCI-World Com owed, by most estimates, at least $1 billion in back taxes. That company later declared bankruptcy.
