The reason Barbour’s comment is meaningful is that he’s saying Murdoch — and not Fox chief Roger Ailes, as some speculated — was the driving force behind the contribution. News Corp. has been at pains all along to stress that the money came from the parent company, not from the network, in part to damp down the perpetual reports of a rift between Murdoch and Ailes. At least some of Murdoch’s family are at open war with Ailes, and the Kremlinology isn’t the sort of thing a giant public company wants to encourage.
