Poll: Voters oppose combined sheriff/chief

When Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin stepped down as Jackson police chief last month, things returned to the old setup – one police chief, one sheriff.

Many Jackson voters appear happy to have a standalone chief again.

A Clarion-Ledger poll of almost 500 voters shows 48.5 percent oppose having a combined Hinds County sheriff/Jackson police chief, while about 37 percent of respondents said they like the combined position.

About 14 percent of people said they are unsure or would not comment.
