Mississippi Republicans mulling a rare opportunity to try to fill an open U.S. Senate seat remained mostly silent Tuesday, but several Democrats said they are considering vying for the position GOP Sen. Trent Lott will leave by the end of the year.
Former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, former Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and former 2nd District U.S. Rep. Mike Espy, who also served in President Bill Clinton’s Cabinet, expressed interest in pursuing the seat. Former Attorney General Mike Moore also is considering a campaign.
Republicans mentioned in speculation about possible candidates repeated their earlier comments, saying it was too early to discuss.
