A variety of candidates spoke today at the Lowndes County Republican Women’s meeting in Columbus. Candidates in attendance included gubernatorial candidate and current Lt. Governor Phil Bryant, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, Lt. Governor candidate and current state Senator Billy Hewes, and Rep. Jeff Smith.
Rep. Jeff Smith (now a Republican) caused the stir of the day when he erroneously stated that Sen. Billy Hewes had once switched parties from being a Democrat to a Republican.
Smith addressed the crowd and referenced some of the folks in attendance who he was elected with back in 1991: Bryant in the House, and Hewes in the Senate. He said he remembered back when Billy was a Democrat, at which point Hewes and his wife Paula, from the back of the room said loudly, “No siree!”
