Jackson residents packed City Council chambers Thursday evening to protest a proposed tax increase for the 2008 budget.

Member of the crowd also urged the council and Mayor Frank Melton to not reduce services for JATRAN and asked them to find other areas to trim expenses.

Melton drew applause when he told the crowd he did not favor a tax increase and would use it only as a last resort. The mayor said he would reconsider the proposed cut to JATRAN if the council looked into management issues.
