State Rep. Robert Johnson, D-Natchez, prevented House Resolution 58 from advancing in the 2009 regular legislative session. The resolution is described as “commending and congratulating the accomplishments of outstanding student athletes, citizens and leaders on the Spirit of America Day .. and designating March 2, 2009 as Spirit of America Day in Mississippi.”
Richard Barrett of Learned, a leader of the white supremacist Nationalist Movement, helped create the “Spirit of America” organization. It has been criticized for honoring only white male athletes.
The resolution cleared the House with no debate. But Johnson, a member of the Legislative Black Caucus, held it on a motion to reconsider and said he expects the House to address the issue again Monday.
