Wicker, Musgrove campaigns got Scruggs funds

A recent National Republican Senatorial Committee news release chastised Democratic former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove for taking more than $110,000 from Dickie Scruggs throughout his political career.

But a Sun Herald search of federal campaign-finance reports found Wicker, a seasoned elected official, also took a total of $1,000 in donations from Zach Scruggs in past elections. The donations to Wicker were not mentioned in the news release issued Tuesday, but campaign reports also show the money from Zach Scruggs, who along with his father has pleaded guilty to a charge related to a conspiracy to bribe a state judge, is now in the hands of a charity.

Ryan Annison, Wicker for Senate spokesman, said Wicker, who had received the money for his bids to be re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for a north Mississippi district, gave the same amount to Mission Mississippi in March.

“We didn’t make a big production out of it; we just did what we thought was right,” Annison said.
