Russia has almost reverted ‘iron curtain of authoritarianism,’ says Sen. Wicker

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Tuesday suggested that Russia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev, has reverted to totalitarianism.

“Voices are being heard, there is a thread of truth coming from the almost iron curtain of authoritarianism we have reverted to in Russia,” said Wicker from the Senate floor.

Wicker, along with Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), is sponsoring a bill, the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act, that would seek to punish Russian officials for complicity in the 2009 death of Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky. The bill would ensure that the 60 or so officials allegedly involved in the crime will not be able to receive travel visas to the United States.\
