Brett Favre was a longtime fan of the New Orleans Saints, the team closest to his Mississippi home.
Now it’s his job to defeat them.
Favre and the Vikings are one win away from the Super Bowl after a 34-3 romp over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at the Metrodome.
Perhaps it’s fitting that Favre returns to the Superdome, where he won his only Super Bowl championship after the 1996 season with the Green Bay Packers.
The Saints will play in their first conference championship game in franchise history. Favre said he has talked with Saints coach Sean Payton periodically.
“I told him secretly I’m a Saints fan,” Favre said. “We didn’t think we were going to actually play. There was always an outside chance, but go figure. Now I’m going to be involved in a game that either we go to the Super Bowl or are knocked out.”
