Sid Salter: School funding ‘grades’ surprising

Legislative leaders arguing against turning K-12 education finance decisions over to the courts rather than to the Legislature have offered this basic argument – while MAEP has indeed only been “fully funded” twice, the fact is that current state government leaders and the Legislature provided the largest amount of funding for K-12 education in state history during the most recent legislative session.

Initiative 42 proponents argue that failure to “fully fund” MAEP every year since inception is evidence that lawmakers should no longer be trusted with the decision.

But in this Rutgers study, here’s empirical evidence (produced by fairly liberal champions of improving education finance) of two bedrock contentions made by Mississippi legislators – that Mississippi has made a better than average effort to improve K-12 education finance given the state’s poverty and that that effort has been a sustained one since the crash of 2007.
