Barbour calls for cigarette tax hike, but math’s fuzzy on regional average cigarette tax

In his otherwise very prudent Executive Budget Recommendation for Fiscal Year 2010, Gov. Haley Barbour calls for a cigarette tax hike of 24 cents per pack which the governor claims would “put Mississippi’s cigarette tax at forty-two cents (.42) per pack, essentially the same as the average of the tax now levied by Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.”

including Mississippi in that average skews the average. That wasn’t unintentional, either.

In the surrounding states, Alabama charges 42.5 cents per pack while the price in Arkansas is 59 cents.
