School careful about its band playing a political rally

DeSoto County school officials said Thursday that Southaven High School band members performed at a rally for lieutenant governor candidate Tate Reeves on a voluntary basis and that no public funds were used to pay for the appearance at the partisan political event.

Reeves, a Rankin County native who currently serves as state treasurer, faces Billy Hewes, a state senator from Gulfport, in Tuesday’s Republican primary for lieutenant governor.

A fish fry was held on Reeves’ behalf Thursday evening at Southaven’s Snowden Grove Park, and DeSoto County Schools Supt. Milton Kuykendall was one of several public officials scheduled to appear to endorse Reeves, according to an e-mail from state Sen. Merle Flowers, R-Olive Branch, inviting members of the media and others to the event.
