The two candidates for secretary of state have different philosophies about the need for voter identification in Mississippi.

Republican Delbert Hosemann of Jackson said ID would ensure a fair voting process, but Democrat Rob Smith of Richland said the requirement isn’t a panacea for election reform.

For years, voter ID has been a divisive issue in the Legislature, where some lawmakers – many of them black – have fought it, saying it hearkens back to the Jim Crow laws designed to prevent minorities and poor people from voting.
