Gayle Wicker: Recognize the dangers of tanning

For many Mississippi families, summertime is synonymous with enjoying our beautiful outdoors — from the beaches of the Gulf Coast to the rolling hills of north Mississippi. It is also a good time to remember to protect yourself from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Overexposure to UV radiation can lead to skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 3.5 million Americans this year will be diagnosed with some form of this disease, leading to more than $8 billion in health care costs annually. However, tanning is not only a health risk during the hot summer months, but also throughout the year because of the threats posed by indoor tanning beds….

…We need to spread the message — especially to our young women — that the dangers of indoor tanning are real.
