Senate Democrats on Wednesday lost by a 25-24 margin in an effort to restore the $76 million Gov. Haley Barbour cut from the Mississippi Adequate Education Program earlier this year.
Barbour made the cuts because state tax collections were not meeting projections.
Adequate Education is the program that provides the basics of operating local school districts.
Sen. David Baria, D-Bay St. Louis, proposed taking the money out of the $375 million rainy day fund.
