Mississippi’s elderly and disabled would get a bigger tax break on their properties under a bill passed in the state Senate.

The bill now heads to the House, where it may face some opposition.

The bill the Senate approved Friday increases the homestead exemption from $75,000 to $100,000 for people who are over 65 or totally disabled.

How the measure will affect Mississippi’s 82 counties isn’t clear, but Sen. Billy Hewes III said the proposal has been endorsed by tax assessors, homebuilders, real estate agents and several boards of supervisors.
