Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, D-Brookhaven, has been appointed vice Co-Chairman of the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Agriculture and Energy Committee for 2008-2009.

Hyde-Smith, Chairwoman of the Mississippi Senate Agriculture Committee, will help develop NCSL policy that will be forwarded for discussion to national leaders in Washington, D.C.

“You will be leading your committee during a period of great challenge for state legislatures – a time when legislatures strive to innovate on dozens of policy fronts and a time of significant challenges for states in the federal system,” wrote Joe Hackney, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives and president of NCSL.
Hyde-Smith, who has served since 2000, said she was happy to serve and looked forward to the challenge.

“I am very honored that NCSL has asked me to be the Vice Chairman of their Agriculture and Energy Committee. I feel this will put me in a position to address policy and agriculture and to find ways to benefit our state as well as the county as a whole,” Hyde-Smith said.
Hackney said Hyde-Smith has expertise that will be valuable in crafting debate on state-related policy matters.

“Senator Hyde-Smith brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the table,” Hackney said. “I am pleased that she has accepted the appointment and I look forward to her valuable contributions to state public policy over the next year.”
