SH Editorial: Bryant has key role to fill at the CMR

Vernon Asper’s resignation as chairman of the Commission on Marine Resources gives Gov. Phil Bryant yet another opportunity to help reform the Department of Marine Resources, which the five-member commission oversees.

But unless other members of the commission follow Asper’s example, Bryant’s choice for Asper’s successor may be limited to Hancock County.

That’s because no more than two members of the commission can be from the same coastal county.

Each of the five members is assigned a particular aspect of the marine resources community to represent.

Asper, a professor at the University of Southern Mississippi who lives in Hancock County, served on the CMR as a member of an incorporated nonprofit environmental organization.
