Simpson and Brisolara said all their actions with proper and legal, a report prepared by Hood’s team has erroneous information and they believe the probe was politically motivated.
Hood plans to run for re-election. Simpson has said he may run against him.
“I think it is absolutely political,” Simpson said. “I think he’s trying to build a file and attack my character.”
The incident raises questions of whether the incident will muddy political waters in next year’s statewide elections. Will Hood use surveillance pictures of Simpson at the jail in his re-election campaign?
“I had not thought about that,” Hood said, “but it is public record.”
“There was nothing political about this at all,” said Hood.
“My office is obligated to investigate public integrity complaints. Two investigators were on it before I even knew about it.”
