LONG BEACH — U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., toured BP’s main staging area early today and said he was impressed with the amount of equipment and personnel the company has amassed for Mississippi — for defense and cleanup.
He walked among rows of equipment like marsh masters, designed to maneuver without leaving deep tracks, and surf rakes that remove tar and debris in a 4-foot-wide swath. In the distance were tanker and vacuum trucks and several hundred workers getting their orders.
Mississippi beaches were dealing with little or no oil or tar at 8 a.m., during the tour, and the equipment stood idle. That was OK by Taylor.
