Shooting can teach athletes a lesson

The nightmare that began on the Fourth of July should serve as a classic cautionary tale for players here, there, everywhere in the NFL.
Beware: The decisions you make after the game can carry far more serious repercussions than any move you make on the football field. You are responsible for the company you choose to keep.
In short, just because you’re a big-time football star with the world at your feet, that doesn’t make you invincible. Please pardon the reference, but a bullet doesn’t play favorites.
When NFL training camps open in less than a month, look for coaches and officials with every team to lecture on the sad, sordid story of Steve McNair and his untimely death. It should be the ultimate reality check, a stark example that wealth and celebrity do not assure safety and security.
