Mississippi Democrats increased efforts Thursday to elect Sen. Barack Obama as they objected to Social Security comments made by Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

The state’s Republican Party leaders said McCain is simply looking at ways to shore up the federal program, and that his comments are being misconstrued as a political tactic.

On the campaign trail last month, McCain told voters in Denver that the system for funding Social Security is “a disgrace” because younger workers must contribute to it without any assurances it will help them in the future.
