Some cities seeking own representation

Several Mississippi cities are lobbying for their own representation.

Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler and city aldermen recently approved resolutions stating the city’s desire for its own House district and a Senate seat made of Madison and an adjoining area with similar characteristics and interests.

According to legislative estimates, new House districts will have around 24,317 residents, while Senate districts will average about 56,769.

“If you look at our corporate limits, we have about 25,000, and that should be the magic number,” Butler said.
