House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, told the executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board that perhaps the 15 community colleges are not focusing their resources on the classroom.
Gunn made his comments Thursday after Community College Board Executive Director Andrea Mayfield said of the schools’ 6,162 full-time employees, 2,397 are classroom instructors.
“The Legislature’s focus is to get money into the classroom,” he said during meetings of legislative working groups formed to make recommendations to the full Legislature in terms of the state’s spending and taxing policies. “We want to see money going to the classroom.”
Gunn said educating students is the mission of the community colleges.
