Stacey Pickering says Harrison County Sheriff George Payne Jr. must pay for stolen goods

The State Auditor’s Office has asked former Harrison County Sheriff George Payne Jr. to repay the county for guns, night vision goggles, vehicles and hundreds of other pieces of missing county property after an audit that began as he was leaving office.
But the auditor’s office said Payne hasn’t responded to its demand issued by certified letter on May 20 asking for $21,166.69 to be paid by the former sheriff within 30 days, so it has turned the case over to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for possible prosecution. Current Sheriff Melvin Brisolara, who took over in January 2008, said he requested the audit when he was taking office and that Payne hasn’t worked with him to recover the missing items.
