Lawmaker proposes ‘scarlet letter’ car tags for DUI

Rep. Gary Chism wants Mississippi’s repeat drunken driving offenders to have “scarlet letter” automobile tags that display their transgressions.

Chism, R-Columbus, is drafting a bill similar to laws in Ohio and other states that would require those convicted of a second-offense DUI to have special car tags.

“If you ain’t learned your lesson after the first one, then we need to step in and do something to get your attention,” Chism said. “… Maybe if all your neighbors know, and the Highway Patrol will know, they won’t be as likely to get out there weaving on the roads again.”
