Jackson leaders fear airport takeover by state

Jackson city leaders said they’re fighting a state takeover of the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport.

Mayor Tony Yarber and the City Council said Tuesday that state legislation is coming in an effort to seize control of the airport. State Sen. Josh Harkins is authoring an airport takeover bill, 16 WAPT’s Scott Simmons reported.

Even though the airport is in Rankin County, it’s technically Jackson property. The city owns the property and the buildings at the airport, and appoints members to the board…

…Yarber claims that Gov. Phil Bryant and others are supporting the bill.

“This is not just a level that is happening from a member of the Legislature. This is an executive level conversation that is happening at the executive levels of government in the state of Mississippi,” Yarber said.
