Miss. lawmaker has questions about primary election

Sen. Kenny Wayne Jones has not ruled out contesting the results of the election that saw him lose the Democratic primary for Senate District 21 to former Sen. Barbara Blackmon by 34 votes.

State Democratic Party Chairman Rickey Cole said the certified count had Blackmon with 4,832 votes to Jones’ 4,798.

Jones, who chairs the Legislative Black Caucus, said there were “some things I want to look at, just out of fairness to the team I had.”

Specifically, Jones said Friday, he needs an explanation why poll workers at one Holmes County precinct took three hours to get the ballots to the courthouse after voting stopped at 7 p.m. Aug. 4.
