State Sen. Tony Smith appears set to announce a run for Southern District Public Service Commissioner in the coming days.
Smith has served one term in the Mississippi Senate representing SD 47, perhaps the most gerrymandered district which has stretched from Pearl River County to Jackson County.
He has been a strong member of the Senate Conservative Coalition led by fellow Sen. Chris McDaniel, whom Smith heavily supported in the 2014 US Senate race between the Jones County state senator and eventual winner US Sen. Thad Cochran.
In running for PSC, Smith joins another McDaniel ally, former attorney for the US Senate challenge Mitch Tyner, in seeking such a seat. Tyner recently announced a run for Central District PSC.
A Smith supporter is said to be running to replace the outgoing state senator, that being Mike Tyson, a recently retired law enforcement officer.
