Still hope for car tag reprieve

In a Tuesday legislative agreement on a 50-cents-a-pack cigarette tax, there was also a promise to set aside money to stave off what could be massive increases in car tag prices.

If it passes, it would spare tag buyers half of the increase, which would have cost some car owners hundreds of dollars more a year, depending on a vehicle’s assessed value.

Several factors affect the price of a tag, including local millage rates, privilege taxes and other charges.
