Melton should step down for the city’s sake as well as his own

Ward 4 City Councilman Frank Bluntson raised the obvious question in reaction to Jackson Mayor Frank Melton’s federal indictment last week.

“Why is the federal government spending all this money prosecuting the mayor on an issue that has already been addressed in state court?” Bluntson, probably the Melton’s most loyal Council ally, asked a television station.

The answer is just as obvious: justice.

Just as obvious is the reality that the remaining year of Melton’s term will be dominated by defending himself against federal charges of civil rights violations in connection with the 2006 damage of a northwest Jackson duplex.
