Mississippi Republicans could be happy with results of Super Tuesday, if having a Southerner and another with Mississippi roots matters.

For state Democrats, the close results of “Tsunami Tuesday,” as it was called, when more than 70 million voters in 24 states chose more than 2,700 Democratic and Republican convention delegates, means Mississippians might actually have a hand in choosing a party nominee March 11.

A frequent visitor to Mississippi, John McCain resonates with many Republicans here because of his military record and family ties. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam war and a former prisoner of war, he was once stationed at Meridian Naval Air Station where McCain Field is named for his grandfather, Admiral John Sidney McCain, a Carroll County native. A guided missile destroyer, the USS John McCain, and the “McCain Quarterdeck” at the Naval ROTC facility at Ole Miss are named for his grandfather.

Mike Huckabee has a following, too, as a former governor of neighboring Arkansas.
