Jackson County voters decide June 23 on 2 percent hotel tax to support tourism

Jackson County voters will decide June 23 if they will establish a 2 percent tax on hotels and motels that would go toward tourism marketing on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Jackson County supervisors voted today to hold the special election June 23. The referendum will need 60 percent of the vote to pass.

The board decided to hold a special election rather than wait on the November general election so the issue will get more attention.

“The experts say that you’ll get a better turn-out during a special election,” Supervisor Barry Cumbest said.
