Suspended Washington County Tax Collector Patricia Lee said she is innocent of charges that she and eight current and former deputies filed fraudulent paperwork to give residents car tag discounts.
“She demands a speedy trial so she can go ahead and get to the bottom of it and be exonerated,” said Johnnie Walls, Lee’s attorney, on Thursday.
Hours earlier, Gov. Haley Barbour suspended Lee at the request of the Washington County Board of Supervisors. Also Thursday, investigators from the offices of Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood and State Auditor Phil Bryant pored over records in Lee’s office.
