Rep. Gene Taylor abandoned his opposition to Democratic plans to reauthorize a government health-care program for low-income children and voted for the measure on Thursday.

With the help of Taylor, a Democrat from Bay St. Louis, and Rep. Bennie Thompson, a Democrat from Bolton, the bill was approved 265-142. The vote, however, was short of the two-thirds margin supporters will need to override President Bush’s expected veto of the legislation.

Mississippi’s two Republican House members, Reps. Chip Pickering and Roger Wicker, have steadfastly rejected Democratic plans to expand the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.
