Council to hear comments on flag, asks supporters to leave poles at home

Mississippi state flag supporters are welcome to bring their flags to the Tupelo City Council meeting, but not their poles.

Citing safety issues, the council has asked the police to prevent people from bringing flags on poles into the council chambers where representatives from both sides of the issue will be speaking.

“People have rights, but like Ole Miss football, you can bring you flag but not the stick,” said Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton, referencing the longstanding rule at the university’s football stadium. “I’m not saying that anything will happen, but we expect a good crowd, and if someone gets passionate about their beliefs, I don’t want to create any kind of potential situation.”
