Vicksburg Post on Edward Snowden

Edward Snowden is America’s greatest paradox.

The former NSA contractor who leaked top-secret details of U.S. government surveillance programs has been hailed as a patriot and hero of Fourth Amendment rights and denounced as a traitor.

Love Snowden, or hate him; the choice is yours, thanks to a framework set in place more than 200 years ago.

The truth about Snowden, who stole and released classified documents, falls in some moral gray area that Americans prefer not to imagine and haven’t earnestly dealt with since Daniel Ellsberg released the Pentagon Papers during the height of the Vietnam War.

The split reaction to Snowden’s information leak is as fundamental to American political ideology as the U.S. Constitution.
