Weekend Forecast: BCS berths, prized coach job may get settled Saturday

A Rose Bowl berth, a possible BCS at-large spot, the inside track to the Big East title and the future of a coaching job at one of the most prestigious programs in college football are all on the line this weekend.

Let’s start with the one certainty. Either Ohio State or Iowa will win the Big Ten in Columbus. If momentum is any indicator, the Buckeyes have a huge advantage with three impressive win in a row while the Hawkeyes fell to Northwestern and lost their starting quarterback. Kirk Ferentz maybe have worked miracles this year, but to win at Ohio Stadium with a redshirt freshman behind center would surpass all of them.

A close second in the certainty scale would be TCU going to the BCS with a win against Utah. The Horned Frogs still have games against Wyoming and New Mexico, and there is a slim possibility Boise State could pass them, but they essentially would secure their spot by winning at home against the Utes. Don’t expect Utah to be a pushover. This is a team that has won 22 of 23 games and wants to keep its hold on the Mountain West title.

In the third of three games featuring ranked opponents, Cincinnati or West Virginia would take control of their own destiny in the Big East. The only obstacle remaining for both teams would be a game against Pittsburgh.
