When lawmakers get down to business Tuesday for the 2014 legislative session, expect Hattiesburg’s messy 2013 mayoral election to loom large again in the form of proposed election law reform.
Rep. Toby Barker, R-Hattiesburg, said he will roll out municipal election reform legislation at some point in the next few weeks. He declined to go into specifics about the contents of his upcoming bill.
“I want to make sure we have a productive conversation,” Barker said.
The need for better-defined election laws, including those involving absentee ballots, gained support from both the Mayor Johnny DuPree and Dave Ware campaigns in the aftermath of last year’s controversial election and subsequent special election.
