Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, appointed last year to replace retiring Sen. Trent Lott, spoke on the Senate floor for the first time Thursday.

Wicker urged fellow lawmakers not to forget the Gulf Coast, which still needs help recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

“Katrina is not over. There are tall hurdles still to overcome,” said Wicker, a Republican who has served in Congress as a House member since 1995.
