Compton, Shaw Endorse DuPree

JACKSON — Johnny DuPree announced today that he received the endorsement of fellow Democratic gubernatorial candidates William Compton Jr. and Guy Dale Shaw. The endorsements were offered on Tuesday night once it was determined that a runoff election would be held to determine the Democratic nominee.

“It’s been a pleasure getting to know these two men on the campaign trail. Having their support and hopefully the support of their voters means a great deal to me,” DuPee said. “We continue to get calls of support from all over the state, people who believe in our message of experience, restructuring public education and creating jobs through small business development.”

Both Compton and Shaw released the following statements:

From William Compton Jr.: “As I’ve campaigned for the Democratic nomination, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know both Johnny DuPree and Bill Luckett, to hear them talk about their plans for Mississippi and to see how they conduct their campaigns. For me, it’s an easy decision. I’m endorsing Johnny DuPree because he’s got the experience, he’s got the vision and he’s got the integrity to lead Mississippi.”

From Guy Dale Shaw: “Johnny DuPree is clearly the best candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor of Mississippi. As a former supervisor and now a three-term mayor of our state’s fourth largest city, Johnny DuPree understands that the decisions made in Jackson have significant impact on the lives of people back home. It’s not about politics with Johnny DuPree. It’s about leadership and working together to make Mississippi a better place to live and work.”

DuPree led the Democratic primary vote with 43 percent. DuPree received more than 170,000 votes, more than any other Democratic or Republican gubernatorial candidate.
Mayor DuPree is serving his third term as mayor of Hattiesburg. Prior to that he served three terms as a member of the Forrest County Board of Supervisors and one term as president of the Hattiesburg School Board. He is a former president of the Mississippi Municipal League. Mayor DuPree is also a small business owner and real estate agent.
