INDIANAPOLIS — It’s possible no one at the University of Florida was scrambling Friday afternoon, but it’s fairly certain a lot of stomachs were. For a period of about 18 hours, there was a reasonable chance the pending vacancy in the Kentucky basketball program would lead to a vacancy with the Gators.
And then, in 40 words or less, came the declaration that changed the day at Florida in the same way James Harrison’s interception return reversed the momentum of Super Bowl 43:
“In response to the rumors circulating about my interest in other jobs, I wanted to address this as quickly as possible. I am committed to the University of Florida and look forward to continuing to build our program here.”
Those were Billy Donovan’s words.
